You are What you Eat.

Consumption, consumption, mass consumption,
amily: Arial;">more intake, more intake, there's no reduction.
Mass markets absorbing and taking in,
violence, destruction-- the wages of sin.
We look, we wonder, we seem surprised,
we try to make sense of our world's demise.
In the womb lives are fed from our mother's tube,
She's given a diet, she's careful, she's shrewd.
She will not take in, conscientious no doubt,
if garbage goes in, then garbage comes out.
She reads and plays music for that babe to hear,
growing inside her, the babe's birth is near.
At last now emerges that babe from the womb,
so absorbent this baby, it eats, it consumes.
Born to this world that babe is a sponge,
ready to soak, new life has begun.
The babe soaks in mommy bad mouthing a race,
the babe sees its daddy striking mom in the face.
The babe hears the good, along with the bad,
the babe hears the mommy, berating their dad.
The child starts growing, from many sources he learns,
the family, the siblings, many books, many words.
He's taught from hard teachers whose hearts have grown cold,
no compassion, no mercy, ill mannered so bold.
Absorbing, absorbing like that sponge, this child soaks,
young and impressionable, learning things from his folks.
All grown with things learned from his youth,
corruption sets in displacing the truth.
From a babe to adulthood whether home or the street,
you are who you are, you are what you eat.
Be careful, be mindful at what you consume,
be shrewd like that mother with that babe in her womb.
So remember, set watchmen, at all your gates,
guard all your doors, give bad things no breaks.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-- think about such things.*

this was really wonderful. you would also make a great
song writer. i could hear this as a song.
good ideas, good merging of the different elements.

This is not what I expected when I read the title, but it is even better. What a responsibility we have to our children! You have made that very clear in this poem.
